Over 8,000 people were present for the dedication of the Hancock County Courthouse on October 20, 1908. One hundred years later, on Saturday, October 18, 2008 the county will start the centennial celebration with courthouse tours from 9 am until 12 noon. McNamara Band will entertain those present from 11 am until noon when the parade will start around the courthouse square. The program will begin at 1:30 with county high school bands playing the Star Spangled Banner. County Board chairman David Walker will give the welcome address and the Honorable Max B. Stewart will be the key note speaker. The cornerstone of the courthouse will be removed and replaced with a time capsule to be opened by future generations. Closing remarks will come from the Honorable Judge Evans with the singing of America led by the high school bands. A centennial tree will be planted on the southeast quarter section of the courthouse to end the celebration. Area churches will provide food and refreshment on the courthouse lawn.
